Rossi delighted with win whilst Stoner hits out at passing

The post-race rider interviews at the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix gathered the three podium finishers in close proximity once more, to provide their views on a thrilling race. Stoner, Rossi and Vermeulen on the podium at Laguna Seca (MotoGP)

Valentino Rossi – Racewinner

`For me it has been fantastic. It´s the first time that I´ve been able to win here, and it was an unbelievable race. The crew made some modifications and I was able to take a much better pace. I had a good start, then a great battle with Casey, which was a lot of fun. It´s an important victory –very emotional- and now in the summer break we will relax, because the championship is so long.´

Casey Stoner – Second Placed

`The mistake I made past halfway was mine; I ran a little wide and lost the front on the turn as I tried to get back on track. It was race over after that. I enjoyed a lot of the race, but I felt that some of the passes a bit too much for me. I´ve been racing for a lot of years and have come through a lot of different ranks, and for me just a couple of passes were a little too much. I would have liked to have had a little bit of a cleaner battle, but anyway we are happy with the result. We´re still at the front of the championship and not too far off.´

Chris Vermeulen – Third Placed

`It was difficult starting from the third row, and these guys got away early. I had a bit of a battle with Hayden and Dovizioso for a few laps, and once we got past them then we had more pace than everyone else. These two were too quick for us today. To be back on the podium in the dry proves that Suzuki are improving, and I´m looking forward to Brno now.´

Rossi stops Stoner for first Laguna Seca victory

World Championship leader Valentino Rossi put an end to Casey Stoner´s victory run with a win at the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix. Valentino Rossi and Casey Stoner in action in Laguna Seca (MotoGP)

Rossi stops Stoner for first Laguna Seca victory World Championship leader Valentino Rossi put an end to Casey Stoner´s victory run with a win at the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix.

Valentino Rossi added Laguna Seca to his list of conquered tracks on the MotoGP calendar in a breathtaking Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix, ending Casey Stoner´s run of wins and garnering an important addition to his points tally heading into the summer break.

In contrast to his comments after Saturday´s qualifying session, Rossi needed neither a gun nor a 30-second headstart to stop the man so dominant in practice. Instead he relied on a storming start and his best pace of the weekend to stifle Stoner´s breakaway attempt, presenting himself as the only object between the Australian and a fourth consecutive victory.

A speedy start, some shaky moments and two top caliber riders separated from the rest of the field made for a thrilling race, and the end result of a 33rd victory for Rossi for the factory Yamaha team –equaling his total for previous manufacturer Honda.

The deciding moment of the race came on lap 24, as Stoner and Rossi prepared to enter the home straight. Having battled back-and-forth amongst themselves at every corner, Stoner ran wide onto the gravel. An attempt to dig his left foot in order to push himself back on-track led to a fall for the 22 year-old, although he nonetheless picked the Ducati Desmosedici GP8 back up with a cushion on the timesheet significant enough to allow him to finish second and move up in the overall classification.

2007 Laguna Seca runner-up Chris Vermeulen rounded off the podium, using the same kind of pace that he had demonstrated in practice. Having started from eighth on the grid, a better result in qualifying could have seen the Rizla Suzuki rider at the very least take advantage of Stoner´s late fall. He took his second rostrum in succession in a positive race for the Australian.

Some 34 seconds down on Rossi as they crossed the line for the final time, Andrea Dovizioso and Nicky Hayden were tussling for the honour of fourth place and the highest position for Honda and Michelin. The JiR Team Scot rookie eventually did enough to deny twice Laguna Seca MotoGP racewinner Hayden in the Repsol Honda rider´s home race, concluding a great maiden appearance at the track.

Randy de Puniet repeated his sixth position from 2007, this time onboard the LCR Honda RC212V, whilst Toni Elias, Ben Spies, James Toseland and Shinya Nakano wrapped up the top ten. Wildcard Spies –on pole for the AMA Superbike race running concurrently with the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix, had believed that he still had one lap remaining as he fought with the established premier class riders.

A first visit to Laguna Seca did not end well for second Fiat Yamaha rider Jorge Lorenzo, who highsided his M1 on the opening lap. He picked up a fractured third metatarsal in his left big toe, an injury that will not endanger his participation in Brno when the World Championship returns in August.

Rossi now leads the standings by 25 points, whilst Stoner´s latest podium finish moves him up to second. Laguna Seca absentee Dani Pedrosa drops down to third place.

Rossi and Burgess play down overtaking accusations

The winner of the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix, Valentino Rossi has expressed his delight with a first Laguna Seca victory and denied accusations of overly-hard overtaking. Valentino Rossi in action in Laguna Seca (MotoGP)

In the aftermath of a first Laguna Seca victory -and some criticism from Casey Stoner of the overtaking moves used to obtain it- both racewinner Valentino Rossi and his Crew Chief Jeremy Burgess were quick to play down any accusations of foul play.

`The overtaking was just like the old days,´ said Rossi after the race, having engaged in a back-and-forth tussle with Stoner up until the Australian came unstuck and suffered a light crash. `I was very strong in braking, and so I tried to attack. I am sorry that Casey thinks some of them were a bit strong but I really don´t agree; I passed only on the brakes, I braked in the same places every time and we never touched. Of course this was an aggressive race, but it was definitely a fair one.´

Rossi´s right hand man Burgess further brushed off the accusation of over-stepping the overtaking mark, stating that: `I think that if Casey had raced in the 80´s and 90´s with Kevin Schwantz, Wayne Rainey and Mick Doohan, then he´d have seen that kind sort of thing every week. It might not have been what he was expecting; probably expected to win the race easily as he had dominated in the practices.´

One particularly tight manoeuvre came at the Corkscrew on lap three, with Rossi nearly coming a cropper on the sharp descent as his tyres hit the gravel. The Fiat Yamaha rider forced Stoner to sit up after coming back onto the track, and acknowledged that he had been let off lightly by the treacherous turn.

`The Corkscrew was a great overtaking spot!´ smirked the World Championship leader. `Sometimes it´s possible to make a mistake there, but the gravel had good grip!´

Rossi´s victory helped him to extend his lead at the top of the World Championship standings to 25 points, with Stoner now the second placed rider in the classification.

Stoner reacts to dramatic race at Laguna Seca

Casey Stoner took second place in the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix on Sunday after an incredible battle with Valentino Rossi and was understandably frustrated having lost the upper hand.

Casey Stoner in the Ducati Marlboro garage

After three races on the top step of the MotoGP podium Casey Stoner had to settle for second at Laguna Seca, after an awesome fight with Valentino Rossi which ended with the Australian crashing and remounting to cross the line thirteen seconds behind the Italian.

Stoner launched from pole position for a fifth successive round and was immediately pursued by Rossi, with the pair swapping positions as they left the rest of the field trailing, appearing to touch on several occasions in some of the best racing seen thus far in 2008.

The stage was set for a Hollywood finale but a rare mistake from the Australian in the final turn, just eight laps from the end, saw him run wide into the dirt and drop his Ducati as the front end dipped into the deep gravel.

A huge gap of more than twenty seconds over third-placed Chris Vermeulen allowed Stoner to return to the race in second place, but there were insufficient laps left for the World Champion to hunt down Rossi, who he now trails by 25 points in the standings.

Afterwards Stoner commented, `A bit more than half way through the race when I made the mistake Valentino seemed to brake a little bit earlier so I had to go around him and I ran off the track, which was my fault. Also with the crash I just tried to come back on the track too quickly but unfortunately I lost the front and it was race over after that.´

Questioning some of Rossi´s tactics Stoner went on to say, `I have been racing for a long time and I have seen a lot of close overtaking passes. I have had them done on me, I´ve done them myself and there is close riding, aggressive riding and then the point that is a little bit over that line.´

`Still we can be happy, we got second place, we are still in the running for the championship and we have had a lot of podiums in a row now.´

Stoner´s boss in the Ducati Marlboro team, Livio Suppo, added, `It was a big battle, a nice battle. It is a bit of a pity because Casey had great pace all weekend and Valentino did well to stop him. Otherwise I think if he would have been able to lead he would have gone off alone, but that is racing. Maybe Valentino sometimes was a little bit over the limit but that can happen.´

Dry win `Ultimate Goal´ for Vermeulen

2007 Laguna Seca runner up Chris Vermeulen is hopeful of fighting for victory this weekend.Chris Vermeulen at Fisherman´s Wharf in San Francisco

Two and a half seasons into his MotoGP career, Rizla Suzuki´s Chris Vermeulen is still chasing an elusive first dry weather victory. One of his best chances of the season will come this weekend at the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix, with the Australian having had two strong World Championship performances and superbike success at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

Speaking at the Hard Rock Cafรฉ autograph session held San Francisco on Tuesday, Vermeulen reflected on the task at hand and revealed that he was certainly hopeful of going one better than his runner-up spot last year.

Last year we finished second and had a good race. If we can repeat that it´s gonna be a great weekend, but the ultimate goal is to try to win one in the dry and I think this week we'll have a good shot,´ said the Suzuki star.

`However, everybody's going to be there and be very fast, so we´ll wait and see.´

One of the riders sure to be speedy at the American track is home rider and Rizla Suzuki wildcard Ben Spies and, whilst he will be rivalling Vermeulen for top billing on Sunday, the latter was full of praise for the newcomer and his familiarity with the scene of the latest MotoGP round.

`Ben raced at that track probably more than anybody else that will be there this weekend; he has a lot of experience on this track and maybe we can learn a few things from him with his knowledge there. He´s a fast rider and it will be great to have him in the team, but we obviously want to beat him as well,´ he concluded.

Vermeulen claimed his first podium of 2008 at Sachsenring last time out.

Hayden: `Home advantage is over´

One of four riders participating in their home Grand Prix this weekend, Repsol Honda´s Nicky Hayden feels his edge over the competition at Laguna Seca is not what it was in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Nicky Hayden in the Repsol Honda Team garage

The winner of the 2005 and 2006 races at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Nicky Hayden was unable to make the historic `three-peat´ last year after an incident on the opening lap. The former MotoGP World Champion remains one of the big favourites for victory at the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix, but has also indicated that the home advantage enjoyed over the past three years is not as great as it once was.

`Racing your home race is always a special deal and something I don´t take lightly. The first couple of years I came to MotoGP we didn´t have a US GP, so I think that makes me cherish it, treasure it even more,´ explains the `Kentucky Kid´.

`I wouldn´t say it's my home track as far as knowing it goes because the MotoGP guys have had three years there, so I don't think it has any advantage for me anymore. But that home crowd's got to be worth something.´

Hayden currently lies eighth in the World Championship standings, and has been hit by a string of misfortune in his quest for a first podium of 2008. At Assen his engine cut out before the line and cost him the final rostrum place to Colin Edwards, whilst in Germany further mechanical difficulties left him unable to finish higher than 13th.

`I´m excited to go to Laguna, even if we go there on a bit of a run of bad luck. Hopefully things will turn around for us, it would be a nice place to get everything to roll from Friday through to Sunday,´ Hayden continues.

`Whatever happens I´ll just keep pushing. Laguna certainly has a special place in my heart. The track itself is like one big lap, it´s not like all different sections, a lot of the turns lead into one another, so you´ve really got to put it all together. Like if you screw up the Corkscrew you miss the next three or four corners. It´s a very technical track and I love it.´

`Last year we struggled, it was our worse place for tyres all year. But I´m excited now because I´ve seen how much Michelin have improved at other tracks this year.

MotoGP returns to Laguna Seca for Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix

The latest round of the MotoGP World Championship takes place stateside this weekend.motogp battle

In the final MotoGP race before the traditional summer break, the World Championship heads across the Atlantic for the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix on July 20th. For the fourth season since the series returned to American soil, the premier class competitors will be taking to the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca to do battle for victory under the Californian sun.

Valentino Rossi is the current MotoGP World Championship leader, and has a point to prove at round eleven. Laguna Seca is one of only three circuits on the calendar at which the five-time titlist has never taken victory, and for the past two years he has been away from the podium in the United States. Pride is at stake for the Italian, keen to head into the summer break with the advantage in the overall classification and hungry to show the American fans why he is regarded as a future MotoGP Legend.

Sixteen points separate Rossi and nearest rival Dani Pedrosa in the standings, with the Fiat Yamaha rider retaking the lead from the Repsol Honda man at the last round in Germany courtesy of a second place finish. Pedrosa´s condition for the race will be something of an unknown at the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix; he picked up finger and ankle injuries at the most recent race in a big crash, and arrives in Laguna Seca via a flying visit to surgeon Dr. Xavier Mir in Barcelona.

He may be only third in the classification, but Casey Stoner is very much the man of the moment in MotoGP. The reigning World Champion is on a run of four pole positions and three race victories in the space of little over a month, and has been dominating the class onboard his Ducati Desmosedici GP8. In an ominous sign for those looking to break Stoner´s run of form, the Australian did the same pole-race win combination at last year´s race in the United States – the start of a similar run of wins after the 2007 summer break.

Fourth in the championship is a MotoGP rookie who has never ridden at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Jorge Lorenzo. The reigning 250cc World Champion was on-hand at last year´s race to provide commentary for Spanish television, as the lower cylinder categories´ absence from proceedings at the American round meant that he was free to perform a spot of moonlighting. The Fiat Yamaha rider is regaining confidence after a series of injuries and looking to return to his early season form, albeit without the fractures, bruises and concussions that came with the initial success.

`Texas Tornado´ Colin Edwards is the highest placing American rider as he returns to home soil, this time riding for the Tech 3 Yamaha team. He took second place at the World Championship´s reappearance at Laguna Seca in 2005, and this season has put in some great performances with the satellite M1. Edwards is one of only two MotoGP riders to have experience of the track from AMA competition in addition to his three World Championship visits.

Andrea Dovizioso is another rookie making a first appearance at the track, although the JiR Scot rider seems unfazed by any challenge put in front of him in his rookie year. He is sixth in the standings, ahead of a rider who has always gone well at Laguna Seca in both superbike and MotoGP competition, Chris Vermeulen. The Rizla Suzuki man was runner-up in the 2007 race as he confirmed the potential shown at the track in his rookie year, and was the only rider to come close to Stoner as his fellow Australian broke free.

2005 and 2006 racewinner Nicky Hayden is lower down in the classification than he would like, currently in eighth place heading to his home race. `The Kentucky Kid´ brought MotoGP back into the spotlight in America with his 2006 World Championship win, but had a difficult time on his return to Laguna Seca last year when he and John Hopkins collided on the opening lap.

James Toseland –who has taken superbike podiums at Laguna Seca- is currently ninth in the World Championship, ahead of Shinya Nakano by just a single point.

There will be two additional riders to the regular MotoGP field competing at this year´s Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix. Ben Spies is being granted the first of two wildcard appearances in his homeland as he seeks to shake up the established order in the premier class. The reigning AMA Superbike Champion follows on from his Donington stand-in debut onboard the Rizla Suzuki GSV-R with the opportunity to race a third bike for the team on July 20th.

The second AMA competitor added to the entry list is naturalised Anglo-American Jamie Hacking, who has been confirmed as a replacement for injured Kawasaki rider John Hopkins. The 37 year-old has been rewarded for his efforts in Kawasaki´s stateside competition program with a substitute opportunity for `Team Green´.

Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca played host to Grand Prix events from 1988 to 1994, but advancements in MotoGP racing machines required the event to be moved elsewhere while the track was modified and adapted to meet present day safety requirements.

Since December 2004 the circuit has undergone major changes, primarily to increase track safety. The first phase of modernisation included an expanded exit lane, replacement of the kerbs and widening of the main straight, whilst more recent changes involved moving back walls to create bigger run-off areas. The circuit's principal features, however, remain the same, with 3,58 km of track and 11 curves. Temperatures at the track reach scorching levels, and in 2007 the track had to be repaved in preparation for the MotoGP race on the Sunday morning.

The Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix takes place on Sunday July 20th, with practice sessions beginning on Friday.

Rossi emphasises importance of front row for Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix

Predicting another strong performance from Casey Stoner this weekend, Valentino Rossi wants to start from the front in order to prevent another escape from the Australian. Valentino Rossi in Sachsenring

MotoGP World Championship leader Valentino Rossi has the all-important advantage heading to the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix, but knows all-too-well that there is room for improvement at the American circuit. In his three races to date at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Rossi has been on the podium just once (at his first race at the circuit in 2005) and has been cursed by bike and tyre problems over the past two years.

The five-time MotoGP World Champion has not had too much difficulty with either his bike or new Bridgestone rubber since the start of the season –a positive sign as he aims to break his Laguna Seca duck. However, the Italian has been concerned at some of his qualifying performances, having started from the front row at just 50% of the ten races to date in the 2008 season.

`We are going there with the same package that we had in Germany and so we´re going to have to work very hard to close the gap in performance to Stoner; we can´t afford to start from anywhere except the front because, with him in this form, it is then very hard to catch him,´says Rossi in the run-up to this weekend´s Grand Prix, having been unable to catch Stoner at the last three races despite fearsome race pace.

`Laguna hasn´t been one of my favourite tracks in the three years since we´ve been going there and it´s one of the only ones on the calendar where I haven't won. We´re aiming to win this week, that's for sure!

`It´s been a hard track for our bike but it´s been a very good track for Bridgestone and I am confident that our package will work very well there. The last two years I´ve had serious disappointments in the race and it´s been one of the low points of both seasons, I hope I have had all the bad luck I´m going to have there and that this year I can enjoy myself!´ says the Fiat Yamaha rider, the winner of three races already this term.

`California is a great place and this year we will be doing all we can to leave it with good memories, not bad ones!´

A look back at some of the talking points and video features from round ten of the MotoGP World Championship.

MotoGP group in action in Sachsenring

MotoGP got `back in the ring´ from July 11th-13th for the Alice Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland, the tenth round of the World Championship. The paddock was buzzing with expectation on the pre-race Thursday at Sachsenring, a unique track due to its tight and twisty nature.

The action began in earnest on Friday morning, with the first free practice session for the MotoGP riders seeing some trademark dominance from Casey Stoner. The reigning World Champion was having a great Friday, only marred by a lowside crash in the second session. Also hitting the ground was Repsol Honda´s Dani Pedrosa, whose opening day tumble was not the last time he would be involved in an incident over the course of the weekend.

With tricky weather conditions in Germany, protective equipment, settings and grip were always going to be crucial for the MotoGP competitors. In-depth explanation of the gear ratios needed on the Fiat Yamaha M1 over the weekend were given by Jorge Lorenzo´s Chief Mechanic Ramon Forcada, perhaps best illustrated by an OnBoard lap with the Spanish rider at Sachsenring.

Lorenzo´s teammate Valentino Rossi had also made some slight adjustments for the race, with every detail accounted for by the Italian star. An example of his attention to the finer points of MotoGP competition are the adjustments made to his Dainese knee sliders, as shown in a feature interview with those supplying the five-time World Champion with said protection.

Saturday morning saw another dry free practice session for the premier class, their final preparations for the grid-deciding qualifying run. Stoner once again took pole position, but it was a disastrous qualifying session for Rossi as he could only manage to place on the third row. The title contender was not best pleased after the session, knowing that the task of catching his rival had been made yet more difficult.

There was also racing action taking place on Saturday afternoon, with the ADAC Junior Cup youth initiative out on track. Before the young talents put their visors down and revved their engines, however, they were paid a visit by Tech 3 Yamaha riders Colin Edwards and James Toseland, who chatted and signed autographs for those in attendance.

Marco Melandri´s Manager, Alberto Vergani, confirmed on race day that the Italian and Ducati Marlboro had come to a mutual agreement to cut short his contract for 2009, after a disappointing adaptation to the Desmosedici GP8 from the former 250cc World Champion. Whilst he was once again struggling in Sachsenring, teammate Stoner was showing his mastery of the bike and circuit, as shown by an aerial lap following the Australian.

In the MotoGP Race itself, Stoner was once again the dominant force en route to his third consecutive race win. He took advantage of another crash by Pedrosa, who had escaped after taking the holeshot before his sixth lap fall. There was also an early fall for Lorenzo as two of Stoner´s title rivals fell by the wayside.

A run of three victories in a row from pole position was continued by Casey Stoner in Sachsenring.

Casey Stoner in action in Sachsenring (MotoGP)

MotoGP World Champion Casey Stoner continued his spectacular return to form with victory at the Alice Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland, his third win in as many races. The Ducati Marlboro rider braved the wet conditions of the Sachsenring circuit and appeared equally adept to the task as he had been in the dry practice sessions, a sign that will have his title rivals preoccupied for the second half of the season.

The race had looked set to be a wet weather repeat of Dani Pedrosa´s comprehensive 2007 victory, after the Repsol Honda rider once again used his finely-honed launch control to take the holeshot. He stormed out of the blocks and immediately created a two second gap. The advantage increased to nearly eight seconds by the time the Spaniard crossed the line for lap six, but just moments later disaster struck as he lost control of the RC212V and picked up his first DNF of 2008.

Pedrosa´s crash allowed Stoner to return to the script written in practice sessions for the German race, and the Australian needed no further invitation. He assumed the reigns in the same style with which he had taken the win at the past two races, breaking free and riding solo for 23 laps right up until the chequered flag was waved.

Second place from the third row of the grid was a more-than-respectable result for Valentino Rossi, and the runner-up spot allowed the Fiat Yamaha rider to reassume the leadership of the MotoGP World Championship. Heading to the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix in just a week´s time, the five-time title holder now holds a 16-point advantage over Pedrosa, whose hand and foot injuries picked up in the crash may affect his form and perhaps even participation in the Laguna Seca race.

Rizla Suzuki´s Chris Vermeulen forced his way through the pack for a first podium of 2008, in doing so denying MotoGP rookie Alex de Angelis his maiden rostrum placing. Both had great rides in the wet, with the San Carlo Honda Gresini rider equalling his best premier class result to date and becoming the highest-finishing Honda man.

Andrea Dovizioso finished in the top five for the fourth successive race, after getting a fantastic start onboard his JiR Team Scot Honda. Dovizioso came in ahead of Sylvain Guintoli, Loris Capirossi, Randy de Puniet, Shinya Nakano and Anthony West, while the riders outside the top ten were lapped by Stoner on the second shortest MotoGP circuit.

Besides Pedrosa´s tumble, there were also crashes for Jorge Lorenzo, Colin Edwards and Marco Melandri as they fell foul of the tricky conditions.

Hopkins´ goal to return at Brno after successful surgery

Kawasaki´s injured Anglo-American star John Hopkins underwent surgery in L.A. on Monday and is expected to require six to eight weeks of recovery time.John Hopkins in the Kawasaki box

Following his 230km/h crash at the A-Style TT Assen and the full assessment of his injuries by trusted orthopaedic specialist Dr. Arthur Ting, John Hopkins underwent knee and ankle surgery on Monday and has been told he will need three weeks of complete rest on his damaged leg before an extensive rehabilitation programme can commence.

It had already been confirmed that Hopkins would miss the trips to Laguna Seca and Sachsenring, after he was diagnosed as having sustained a fracture to the bottom of his left tibia, reopened a previous fracture also in the left tibia and fractured the lateral malleolus, at the top of his left ankle.

Further examination by Dr. Ting also revealed a tibial plateau fracture just below the knee, and damage to the meniscus (cartilage), which was causing Hopkins´ knee joint to lock. Surgery took place on Monday to reset the bones in the ankle and repair and reattached the meniscus in the knee.

As a result of the operation Hopkins will not be able to bear any weight on his damaged left leg for three weeks, after which he will undergo extensive rehab, with a full recovery from his injuries expected to take from six to eight weeks in total – meaning that returning to action at Brno in the Czech Republic after the summer break is an optimistic but achievable goal.

Hopkins has already battled back from a painful injury this season after he ruptured his groin in winter testing and he now faces another hard slog as he attempts to turn his difficult debut season with Kawasaki around.

Michael Bartholemy, Kawasaki´s Competition Manager, commented, `I am sorry for John, as I know he was looking forward to racing in front of his home crowd at Laguna Seca, where he always enjoys a lot of support. But it´s just not possible; he has had surgery to fix the injuries he sustained at Assen, and now he needs sufficient recovery time to ensure that he´s fully fit before he makes his racing return.´

`Obviously we are hoping that this return will come in the Czech Republic Grand Prix,´ continued Bartholemy, `but we will be monitoring John´s recovery very closely and we have no intention of putting him back on the bike before he´s ready. If this means he doesn´t race at Brno, then that´s how it will be, because we don´t want to risk making things worse by allowing him to return before he is fully recovered.´

The `Team Green´ boss added, `Now we know the full extent of John's injuries we are looking at the possibility of running a replacement rider at Laguna Seca. We will make a further announcement about this ahead of this weekend´s German Grand Prix.´

Gibernau reveals return offers and plays down Melandri substitution

After two tests for Ducati in Mugello, Sete Gibernau claims to have received further riding offers from different teams, and that he is not out to take Marco Melandri´s spot in the factory outfit.

Ducati Marlboro guest test rider Sete Gibernau

From catching up with old friends in Catalunya to two tests in Mugello, the past month has seen a surprise turnaround in the story of Sete Gibernau. The Spaniard´s return to riding with Ducati has created fervent speculation as to a possible racing comeback for the former World Championship runner-up, and Gibernau has revealed that some interesting offers have been put to him.

`There are various possibilities on the table for me from different teams,´ says the 35 year-old. `However, like I have said before, I live on a day-by-day basis. Competing regularly again would be a big effort and sacrifice, and I can´t forget about that just because of the excitement of riding again.

`Anything can happen but, for the moment, nobody has presented me with everything that I need in order to return.´

The specifics of the offers have not been confirmed, but Gibernau was keen to stress that he was not waiting for a reshuffle to replace Marco Melandri in the Ducati Marlboro setup.

`I´m nobody´s substitute,´ stated Gibernau when quizzed on the speculation abounding in the media, although he did not categorically rule out a ride for the factory team should it be presented to him.

`If there is a seat available, then one would have to think it over, but the delicate situation in which Marco finds himself demands that we treat the subject with a high level of respect.´

Competitive lap times with both the Desmosedici GP8 and GP9 in Mugello have added further momentum to the Spaniard´s possibilities of a full time comeback, but he is well aware of the ring rust presented by nearly two seasons away from competition and the demands of a highly competitive series. With the buzz of 800cc action as motivation for a return, Gibernau was also modest about any objectives that he would have should the opportunity arise to line up on the MotoGP grid once more.

`Obviously the idea is attractive, but you have to give credit to the riders that are racing at the moment. I don´t know if I would be at that level, and I have to be aware of this. Perhaps, were I to ride again, my goals would not necessarily include winning races.´

Pedrosa: `2007 Sachsenring win repeat won´t be easy´

Despite a runaway victory by over thirteen seconds in last year´s German race, Dani Pedrosa is not expecting a routine win in 2008.Dani Pedrosa set to go on track with his RC212V Honda

The leader of the MotoGP World Championship and the winner of last year´s race at the famed Sachsenring circuit, Dani Pedrosa is one of the heavy favourites for victory at the Alice Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland this weekend. The Repsol Honda rider is not taking a win for granted, however, fully aware that his rivals also have a strong history at the German track.

`We are working very hard at the moment, trying to improve our performance. We will do our best to repeat my 2007 win but we know it won´t be easy,´ says Pedrosa, currently four points clear of Valentino Rossi at the head of the overall classification.

`Sachsenring is quite a slow track, most of the corners aren´t so fast. My favourite section is the final, faster part: the fast, downhill right-hander near the end of the lap and then the uphill run into the final corner. There is always a good atmosphere at this race with a lot of fans and overflowing grandstands. The track was resurfaced for last year´s race which made it a lot better because before it was very bumpy.´

Michelin have identified the stress placed on the left of the rear tyre as their main obstacle at the track, and their focus on harder compounds is one shared by their Spanish star.

`Set-up is always difficult at Sachsenring because it´s a long race, so you need a harder-than-normal compound on the left side of the tyres,´ he notes. `You use quite a static riding style here, riding more gently and making fewer movements than usual on the bike.´

Pedrosa will once again be using the standard spring-valve version of the RC212V engine, having used the motor to take podium finishes at all but one race thus far in 2008. Team-mate Nicky Hayden is using the pneumatic valve engine that Pedrosa has only briefly tested in preseason and post-race runs.

Stoner expecting to battle for victory in Sachsenring

Chasing a third consecutive victory in 2008, Casey Stoner has confidence in what he and the Ducati Desmosedici GP8 can do at Sachsenring this weekend. Casey Stoner in the Ducati Marlboro garage

Preparing for his second MotoGP race at the Sachsenring circuit when the World Championship arrives in Germany, Casey Stoner is the man of the moment in the premier class. The current title holder was equally as dominant in practice at last year´s race as he has been over the past two Grands Prix in Donington and Assen, but this season he is looking to also end his weekend on the top step of the podium.

`We feel quite confident for Sachsenring, where we were already competitive last year and it was only an issue with tyre life that prevented us from fighting for victory,´ says the Ducati Marlboro rider, whose 2007 teammate Loris Capirossi gave Bridgestone their first podium at the track. With these facts and his current purple patch in mind, Stoner is relishing the chance to take his own first Sachsenring victory.

`I´m sure this (tyre) problem won't happen again this year because Bridgestone have not stopped working and they continually bring us great new material. The bike has been perfect for the last two races and I expect it to go well at Sachsenring too,´ proclaims the Australian.

`The track is a little different to most of the others because there are such long corners, which I don´t like too much, but there are also some fun points and I´m happy to go racing there. It´s been nice to have a few days´ rest after such a demanding month - a weekend off isn´t exactly a holiday but it´s just enough to get your breath back and prepare for the next races.´

Stoner has only once raced a MotoGP machine at the Sachsenring circuit, having suffered a concussion in the warmup that put him out of the 2006 race. His previous best placing in the lower cylinder categories was a second place in the 250cc class.
